I have 660 square feet of possessions to move in the next month, including the stack of shoes above - only the first of many to head over to D's apartment and into a (gasp) shared a closet.
After living alone for years, I'm a nervous to share everything with another person, but I couldn't be happier about moving in with my best friend. And I'm especially thrilled to donate the $10 torch lamp that's accompanied me since college.
Do you have any tips to make moving less stressful? I'm all ears!

I just moved a few weeks ago and the only tip I can offer for de-stressing the whole thing is to take a break whenever you feel like it. It always seems like there's so much to do and sometimes it's hard to make yourself just stop for 20 minutes but it makes a huge difference!
ReplyDeleteHey Megan,
I was wondering if you could help me out with something. I'm going to be going on the job market this fall and I wanted to start putting together my portfolio over the summer so that I had it to hand but I'm kind of confused about what goes in there, what types of things one needs, etc. I've obviously found some generic info via Yale resources but considering that you've got recent experience with the whole thing I was hoping I could pick your brain a bit about it...Hey Megan,

I obviously just had a bizarre cut and paste mishap! So the top is my comment, the bottom is, oddly, an email I sent like 5 hours ago in duplicate! Sigh, ya gotta love Mondays!
ReplyDeletemake a fun playlist! you can listen to music while you unpack and it'll lighten the mood a bit :) anddd make sure you have snacks! we forgot about this the day we moved in together and by the end we were exhausted and starving... hooray for pizza delivery. xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteYou should declutter before you start moving... Organizing experts claim that you only need 10-15 outfits and five pairs of shoes for each season. Sounds scary to me but most people wear the same things over and over.
ReplyDeleteAlso, when it comes to other "stuff" lying around your house ask yourself "Do I really need this or do I just like it?". Nine chances out of 10 you don't need it... It is taking up space in your life and your apartment..
Good luck to you! I'm moving in a few weeks also so I've been doing a lot of research on how to make the move easier. :)
I can not imagine sharing a closet... best of luck to you!!

Just try and organize as you pack. Now is the time to get rid of clutter as well.

I say tackle one room at a time and try not to get overwhelmed by looking at it in the big picture. Baby steps!
ReplyDeleteYayyy sooo exciting!!!
ReplyDeleteSadly I've never moved so I have no tips to share XD

It's so good that you have an entire month to do it, my family and I are actually moving tomorrow after only a week of painting and prepping the new house and there are still so many things to do! The one thing that's been helping me is taking it one step at a time and not focusing too much on the big picture because that's when it gets overwhelming.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your move! :)
Congrats on the move! I would say just pack a little each day so that it's not overwhelming and bring a little over at a time and unpack as you go so you don't have to do it all at once. Good luck!

We have moved so much and just moved a month ago (eek), so my tips are to declutter before moving as much as you can. If you are putting things into boxes then label, label, label. Don't expect to unpack and have everything perfect in a day or even a week - give yourself some time and a break. Hmmmm, my hubby and I have never shared a closet (I usually take the closet in the guest bedroom or in our last house we had two closets in the master bedroom - I miss those days - lol) so I don't have any advice there. Good luck and most importantly try to have fun and take lots of breaks :o)
ReplyDeleteSO exciting! So happy for you! My advice for cohabitation and merging of the assets? Stay organized, keep sentimentality at the curb (your stuffed animal from summer camp? really?) and pick your battles! Best of luck!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!
ReplyDeleteRemember to mark the boxes, so you can find the essential items.
Happy fun :)

Hi there. I'm a new follower but one thing I found to be helpful when I moved was to wrap those "need protection but not bubble wrap" kind of items in towels/washclothes/dish rags. It'll help you save the bulkier, more expensive wrap for those really breakable items. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHappy moving to you! I suggest labeling the heck out of boxes -- makes for a much smoother unpacking process.
ReplyDeletei remember when i moved in with my b/f (now husband) he was the first person i ever lived with other than my parents. it was really tough at first and we actually almost broke up b/c we weren't used to it and we both like things a certain way. best advice i can give is to stick it out and remember why you moved in in the first place :) it gets easier after the first couple of months. This was just the case with me though. you guys may not have any issues. ooh and label your boxes! i forgot to do that and it sucked lol
