There comes a time in every bloggers life that she realizes that her trusty point-and-shoot camera isn't that great. For months I had considered splurging on an SLR, but wasn't sure if the investment was worth it. The tipping point came last week when we scheduled a March vacation to Florida. I have hundreds of so-so photos from last year's trip and this year I want hundreds of gorgeous photos. I purchased the camera on Friday and spent the rest of the weekend playing with my new toy.

The sleep mask in Breakfast at Tiffany's is every bit as iconic as Holly Golightly's little black dress. I've seen a few renditions of the nighttime accessory online, but none were as spot on as a version by Mary Green. So, you can imagine how delighted I was to welcome this sleep mask into my boudoir courtesy of Mary Green.

I know I say this a lot, but the online stock images don't do the item justice. The colors are much more vibrant in person and the padded satin mask is smooth and supple.

Cute packaging always wins me over.

I was thrilled to discover that the elastic "ribbon" tie was actually stitched at the back, so the bow wouldn't come undone during the night.

My absolute favorite detail is the glittery swipe of shadow on the lid. You can also see the peek of a rhinestone eye beneath the lid.

It's certainly premature, but I'm going as a sleepy Miss Golightly this Halloween. Of course, tassel earplugs are just too impractical for an evening out, so earrings will have to suffice.

Bottom Line: Indulgent and totally worth it.

Given my affection for accessories, it's surprising that I hadn't bedecked my iPhone with a cover until recently when Case-Mate offered to send over a couple of cases. It didn't take me long to settle on the glittery, Barbie-esque Glam Case in hot pink.

I used this festive cover throughout the holiday season and I still love pulling the glittery phone from my purse. Happily, the glitter is set in a hard plastic inlay and is smooth to the touch, unlike some other glitter-encrusted items that feel rough and gritty.

One of the most fun parts of the Case-Mate website is the opportunity to design your own phone case. The process is quite simple: upload a photo, resize it, position it, and you're done. I opted for a bit of Badger pride with Bucky (nevermind that Rose Bowl loss).

As expected, the custom-made version took a bit longer than the Glam case to arrive. The image was a little larger on the phone than it appeared online and Bucky's arm slightly wraps around the edge of the phone. It's not a big deal, but something to keep in mind when designing your own and getting close to the edges of the template.

Bottom Line: I definitely recommend Case-Mate the next time you're looking to outfit your phone. What kind of case are you using?

I hope you all had a wonderful time ringing in the new year this weekend! If you're following along on Bedknobs & Baubles, you already know that I put forth a few New Year's resolutions that will be fun to keep:

Shop smart. Plan purchases. Save money. Invest in quality. Buy only what I love. Curb impulse spending.
Clean the closet. Store anything that doesn’t fit right now. Donate unloved pieces or give eBay a whirl. Bring not-quite-right items to a tailor. Get rid of shoes that aren’t comfortable or scuffed beyond repair.
Wear a bikini for the very first time. Eat right to prep for our Floridian vacation, but remember that no one has a perfect body. Don’t forget sunscreen.
Use vacation time liberally. Enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Relax. Bring back weekend adventures with Dave.
Raise a glass to champagne toasts. The little successes are just as important as the big ones. And, yes, accomplishing another work week is reason enough to celebrate.

I've been wanting to try the smoking loafer trend, but hadn't yet found a pair that caught my eye. But this pair from Target is just about perfect: my favorite color and only $19.99.

Edit: I went to Target and tried on the pink pair (also adorable). I'd recommend sizing down. I normally wear a 7 or 7.5, but the 6.5 fit the best.

Last weekend, we gathered for our first Christmas celebration of the season. Admittedly, the day snuck up on me - as Christmas always does - but there was just enough time to whip up a holiday classic: peppermint bark. The candy was a hit, and the most audible raves were from my seven-year-old cousin who took more than half of it home with her. I altered this recipe, omitting the oil, adding more peppermints, and melting the chocolate in the microwave for about two minutes, stirring halfway through.

It's time to give the glittery Kate Spade pumps the attention they deserve. I knew they'd be great, but not this great. I can't wait to wear them to every holiday gathering and each sorta-festive-get-together this season. (I'm not picky. I can make anything a celebration.)

Right now, they're barely over $100 on Amazon and many sizes are still available (as if you needed more of a reason to add them to your wish list). I normally wear either a size 7 or 7.5 (really, I'm more of a 7.25) and Kate Spade shoes fit best in a 7. I don't have any problems with the slingback slipping as I walk.

After all of that handbag debate, what did I do? I spent half of my "free" gift cash on this pair of sparkly Kate Spade pumps. As I read through your comments, I still couldn't decide on what I wanted to do, which made me wonder if a handbag was really the best option for me. But once I stumbled across these playful party shoes, I had no doubt that they were the right choice: special and easy to wear. It certainly didn't hurt that the shoes were on sale, leaving me with another $150 to spend.

Bright pants are intimidating and it's hard to invest in a pair when the trend might not be for you. Luckily, Old Navy has a pair of cropped fuchsia trousers you can purchase for a song at $18 (and if you buy them before the end of the day on 11/8/11, you can use the code "ONFRIENDS" for an additional 30% off).

How to wear them? Just add two classic pieces: a tan sweater and a pair of leopard print loafers. Finish the outfit with a handbag you invested in. I like this classic Willis Bag by Coach - and I imagine it'll just get better with age.

I've been awfully picky with my purchases lately, only choosing quality items that I'm head-over-heels for and passing on the inexpensive quick fix. Take these leopard print flats, for example. Sure, they were a bit of a splurge at $225, but I've worn the pair nearly every day since I purchased them. I absolutely love when classic accessories make a resurgence. This year's tortoise shell trend has been an easy way to add a touch of sophistication for centuries. In its early years, tortoise accessories were made from the shell of the hawksbill turtle. Concern over the turtle's extinction in the early 20th century lead the industry to recreate the mottled black and brown pattern in celluloid. I've been reveling in the print with a chunky J.Crew necklace and even paying homage with a newly curated Pinterest board.

Once the thermometer dips, spending hours in the kitchen no longer seems like work - and with an abundance of apples at the grocery store, a rustic apple crisp seemed like the perfect way to welcome autumn. Delicious on its own for dessert, it was also incredible swirled into a hearty bowl of oatmeal the next morning, leaving the pan empty less than 12 hours later.

I was flipping through an old issue of Harper's Bazaar when I spotted an Isabel Marant bracelet that looked just like one I already own. I'm sure the Isabel Marant version is beautiful (especially for over $200), but I prefer the rough-hewn elegance of the buffalo bone and stone bracelets by Bougainvillea Boutique. Zara officially launched its American e-commerce site yesterday. When I visited The Netherlands eight years ago, one of my first purchases was a cream-colored, angora sweater from Zara. I even start making plans of the vacations it'll accompany me on* - until that heart-wrenching moment when I consider the sticker price. We thought Saturday morning would be the perfect time to drive to Pattison State Park to see Wisconsin's tallest waterfall and enjoy the warm, sunny weather. But road construction thwarted our plans. When we were two miles from the park, we came to a detour - a detour that took us on a forty minute drive away. By that time, we could see Duluth, Minn. on the horizon and continued our drive to the neighboring state. We only had about 45 minutes to spend in Duluth before we had to drive back to Ashland for "Class Reunion Part Two," but we made the most of it. We purchased Minnesota beer, saw the famous Lift Bridge (appropriately named because it rises to accommodate passing shipping boats) and walked along Lake Superior's shore.

On Friday morning, I took Dave to Bayfield, Wis., a sleepy tourist town on the shore of Lake Superior. Bayfield's highlights include: calm water for sailing, berry patches and state parks. While my 10-year class reunion wasn't that much fun, numerous roadside attractions and daytime adventures made the trip to Ashland worthwhile. First stop: Fred Smith's Concrete Park in Phillips, Wis. In 1950, Fred Smith, lumberjack and local tavern owner, began construction of concrete statutes embellished with shards of broken glass. The self-taught American folk artist created over 200 sculptures for passersby to enjoy.

When Plum for Polly asked me to style a Jeffrey Campbell oxfords, I was a little intimidated. Oxfords have never fallen in my sartorial comfort zone. (If footwear doesn't have a high heel, low vamp or delicate strap, it doesn't make its way into my closet.) I also quickly learned I'm not a girl who can juxtapose oxfords with a feminine sundress. (Trust me, I tried.) Instead I opted for a pair of military-inspired shorts and a slouchy sweater - topped with a bit of sparkle. Give it another month and I'm sure this will be my go-to outfit on balmy September days.

I'm not sure what's more overwhelming: packing up to move or unpacking once moved in. It's amazing how much stuff one gal can accumulate - and it's slightly embarrassing when the majority of it falls into one of two categories: books or clothes. After a week of tripping over boxes, Dave and I made it a priority to head to the Chicagoland IKEA for bookshelves, an ottoman (which has become Bacon's favorite perch) and a dresser. We didn't come home with a dresser this time, but the DoubleTree's warm cookies more than made up for it.
